Goslings Black Seal Rum 151 Proof is a powerhouse overproof rum that combines intense strength with surprisingly rich, molasses-driven flavor. Unlike many high-proof spirits that lean harsh and one-dimensional, this expression retains the signature Black Seal depth—caramel, vanilla, spice, and dark fruit—while delivering explosive intensity at 151 proof. It’s a bartender’s weapon for tiki cocktails and flaming drinks, yet refined enough to showcase real character when handled carefully.
Origins & Craftsmanship
Produced by Goslings in Bermuda, this rum is part of a legacy dating back to 1806, when the Gosling family began importing and later blending rum on the island. The “Black Seal” name comes from the original bottles sealed with black wax, which became synonymous with the brand.
The 151 expression builds on the classic Black Seal formula but is bottled at an extremely high 75.5% ABV (151 proof).
Key production details include:
-
Base: Molasses-based rum
-
Distillation: Blend of pot still and continuous still rums
-
Aging: Up to ~3 years in charred American oak barrels
-
Style: Overproof dark rum
This combination preserves both flavor intensity and structural balance, allowing the rum to remain flavorful rather than simply alcoholic heat. It’s specifically designed for cocktails, tiki builds, and culinary use, where high proof amplifies aroma and flavor.
