Introduction
This red wine comes from the United States, originating from the California region. Lyeth Estate was founded in Sonoma County in 1981 by Chip Lyeth, whose passion for winemaking grew out of a 1972 family trip to Bordeaux, France. Chip Lyeth was dedicated to the vision of making outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon and blending in other varietals for complexity, which led to the creation of the Meritage blend upon which Lyeth built its success. Over 30 years later, the winery remains dedicated to this tradition of Bordeaux-inspired blending. Currently, the Director of Winemaking is Nicole Walsh, who has over 25 years of experience and a commitment to sustainability.
Wine Description
The colour of this Cabernet Sauvignon is often described as deep crimson or dark, rich ruby. The aroma is complex and expressive, offering notes of red cherry, boysenberry-cedar, a touch of minerality, or raspberry and floral notes. For the 2022 vintage, the nose includes violets and raspberries. The palate is full-bodied, rich, and often described as having a generous texture. Flavours include savoury spice, bramble raspberry, chocolate-cherry, black currant, plum, cocoa, and ripe plums.
The wine is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon. Some vintages, such as the 2016, are a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot, 10% Merlot, and 2% Malbec, while others like the 2022 vintage are noted as 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is aged, with the 2022 vintage spending 12 months on 100% new French oak, which adds depth, richness, and a smooth, velvety mouthfeel. It has balanced acidity and a structured tannic profile. The finish is long and lingering, revealing notes of baking chocolate, ripe plums, or just more dark fruit. The stylistic notes are bold, structured, and complex. The alcohol by volume (ABV) typically ranges from 13.5% to 14.5%. Information on the wine being organic is not available. The optimal drinking window for the 2022 vintage is noted as 'Now to 2028'.
